The King's School, Macclesfield is a day school with a co-educational Junior Division (3-11), parallel Boys' and Girls' Divisions (11-16) and a co-educational Sixth Form. In September 1997, it opened an Infants' Department (3-7). It has its roots firmly in the grammar school tradition. Pupils are encouraged to set themselves high standards in everything.
In the classroom the emphasis is on developing basic skills in a disciplined environment and, as interests develop, on pursuing them to the highest levels. The curriculum is broad based in the initial stages and the options introduced later ensure the development of academic and artistic talents. Classes are small so that individual needs can be met. The School has a strong Oxbridge tradition and a very high proportion of its pupils go on to Higher Education.
Music, drama, art and CDT are important elements in the curriculum and pupils are encouraged to develop their talents in these areas in their own time as well. Regular concerts, operas, plays and exhibitions are held throughout the year.
The School has a strong reputation for sport. In 1997 King's gained the coveted Sportsmark Gold Award from the Sports Council for its record of opportunity and excellence in sport. All the major team games are played to the highest level. At the same time a wide range of sporting and outdoor activities are available. Clubs and societies of all sorts meet in lunch hours, after school and at weekends.
There is a flourishing Community Service programme which pupils enjoy and benefit from.
Entrance to the School is by application to the Infants' Department, examination at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 13, or based upon GCSE results at Sixth Form level; Scholarships and Bursaries are available.
